Since the 1990, the popularity of Pilates has skyrocketed.  No wonder!  Pilates is a great form of exercise for people of all fitness abilities and
can be practiced almost everywhere!  Pilates has also been the answer to most fitness concerns for the over 50s and here’s why…

Gentile and effective way to stay fit

As Pilates is incredible flexible and can be tailored to individual needs and abilities, it’s a very gentile way of exercising.  Jyoti Sigouin, a Flavours Holidays Pilates Instructor, says “I’m constantly tweaking and changing exercises” which goes to show how much personalisation can go into Pilates.  After all, mature exercise should be focused on maintaining fitness levels to the best of our ability in order to stay active. That doesn’t mean that it’s not effective though! Pilates focuses on building a strong “core”–the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine which will make you look toned and trim.

Increased balance and stability lead to great posture!

Pilates focuses on strengthening the core, the so-called “powerhouse” of our body”, which helps tackling problems with balance and stability.  A common problem for the over 50 population!  Increased control over your spine, core and legs will also lead to great posture and might make you a few inches taller.

Pilates helps with age related ailments

The flexibility of Pilates makes it a fantastic exercise programme for everyone with age-related ailments.  Pilates is great for those suffering from arthritis as it helps to mobilise the joints and develop range of motions which helps to reduce pain and stiffness.  For sufferers of osteoporosis, Pilates can also help to increase bone density in the spine and hip.  Just make sure that your Pilates instructor is aware of your ailment and knows how to create a programme for the special requirements.

Improved memory and focus

The Pilates method also presents an opportunity to improve your brain activity.  Regularly Pilates exercise will increase your memory by continuously learning new exercises and add new movement skills to your existing.  By allowing your brain to relax, you will also increase concentration and focus.  What other form of exercise trains not only your body but also mind?

It’s a fantastic opportunity to make new friends!

Of course, just like any other exercises – it’s always more fun to do it with a group of people.  Jyoti recommends joining a class. “It can be a fun way to meet new friends and aid your progression.  Many of my students also decide to go for a coffee or tea after their class, which makes it a great social gathering.”
